Jaane Jaan is a suspenseful thriller film about a single mother, Maya, and her daughter, Tara, who commit a crime and a neighbor, Naren, who helps them cover it up amidst a police investigation. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over ₹100 crore worldwide.
Maya D’Souza, a divorced, single mother, works at a cafeteria in Kalimpong, a picturesque hill station in India. Naren Vyas, a reclusive but brilliant mathematics teacher, lives next door to Maya and Tara. Naren is solemn and introverted, and his morning exchanges with Maya from whose cafeteria he buys lunch, is the brightest part of his day.
One night, Maya’s abusive ex-husband, Ajit, shows up to extort money from her, threatening both her and Tara. The situation quickly escalates into violence and Ajit is killed by mother and daughter on the apartment floor.
In order to deceive the investigation, Naren murders a second person, a homeless man who he had seen prior on his commute to work, and makes the police believe he was Ajit, in order to obfuscate the time of the murder and make it so that in the end he could take the fall.
The police, led by Inspector Karan Anand, investigate the murder and soon become suspicious of Maya and Naren. Karan is drawn to Maya, despite his suspicions, and the two develop a romantic attraction.
As the investigation progresses, the secrets of Maya’s past and Naren’s motivations are slowly revealed. It is revealed that Maya was sold into a dance bar by Ajit when she was younger, and that she escaped with Tara and fled to Kalimpong to start a new life. Naren is also revealed to have a tragic past, and his decision to help Maya and Tara is motivated by a desire to protect them from the same suffering that he has experienced.
In the end, Naren confesses to the crime of killing the homeless man and is imprisoned. He spends his time in prison solving a complex mathematics problem, which he eventually publishes in a prestigious journal. Maya and Tara are able to move on with their lives, free from the fear of Ajit.
