Kalank is a 2019 Indian period drama film directed by Abhishek Varman and featuring an ensemble cast including Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sanjay Dutt. Set during India’s partition in 1944.

Cast and characters:
Madhuri Dixit plays the lead role of Bahaar Begum, a courtesan who owns her kotha. Her performance is impeccable as she brilliantly conveys Bahaar Begum’s complexity.

Sonakshi Sinha portrays Satya Chaudhry, an imprisoned wife forced into an unwanted union with Dev Chaudhry. Sonakshi delivers a subtle performance that brings out Satya’s emotional turmoil effectively.

Alia Bhatt excels as Roop, a young woman forced into marrying Dev Chaudhry against her will. Alia’s performance is outstanding as she skillfully shows Roop’s growth from an innocent young girl into a mature and robust woman.

Varun Dhawan gives an explosive performance as Zafar, a blacksmith in love with Roop. Varun’s performance successfully brings out Zafar’s character’s passion and vulnerability.

Aditya Roy Kapur portrays Dev Chaudhry, an influential businessman married to Satya. Aditya delivers an understated performance that successfully captures his character’s struggles and conflicts.

Sanjay Dutt is impressive as Balraj Chaudhry, Dev’s older brother. His portrayal brings out all of Balraj Chaudhry’s intricate character traits.

Storyline: Kalank tells the tale of love, passion, and betrayal against the backdrop of India’s partition. It beautifully captures both internal conflict as well as its external manifestation. Love, loss and redemption all play integral parts in its narrative.
